Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS Review: A Landscape Photographer’s Perspective
When I attended the Photo Days at FOTOPROFI in Tübingen, I had the opportunity to test several Sony telephoto lenses in real-world conditions. Among them were the new Sony FE 100–400 mm F4.5 GM OSS and the impressive Sony FE 400–800 mm F6.3-8 G OSS.
As a landscape and architectural photographer, my work has traditionally focused on wide-angle perspectives, dramatic mountain scenery, forests, and architectural details. However, I have long been fascinated by the creative possibilities that telephoto lenses offer. From photographing wildlife such as deer in their natural habitat to isolating distant mountain peaks and compressing entire valleys into a single frame, telephoto lenses allow photographers to see the world from a completely different perspective.
What particularly interested me about the Sony FE 100–400 mm F4.5 GM OSS was its unique combination of versatility, image quality, and a constant F4.5 aperture throughout the entire zoom range. It promises professional performance while remaining compact enough for hiking, mountain photography, and extended days in the field.
In this review, I would like to share my personal first impressions and field experience with the Sony FE 100–400 mm F4.5 GM OSS. I will also explain why, despite its outstanding performance, I will likely not add it to my own kit anytime soon due to its price of €4,999.00 — and why it is nevertheless one of the best Sony lenses currently available for those who are willing to invest in it.
Why I Chose the Sony FE 100–400 mm F4.5 GM OSS
One of the main reasons why I would choose the Sony FE 100–400 mm F4.5 GM OSS over the larger Sony FE 400–800 mm F6.3-8 G OSS is its balance between performance, size, and portability.
Despite its impressive focal range and constant F4.5 aperture, the lens remains surprisingly manageable. Measuring just 119.8 x 328 mm (4.7 x 13 in) and weighing 1,840 g (4.1 lbs), it is still a lens that can realistically find a place in a photography backpack for hikes, mountain adventures, and longer days in the field.
What immediately stood out to me during testing was the excellent handling. Mounted on my Sony Alpha camera, the lens feels remarkably well-balanced and comfortable to use. Even without a tripod, I was able to work handheld with confidence, making it a practical choice for photographers who prefer mobility over carrying large amounts of equipment.
The Sony FE 400–800 mm F6.3-8 G OSS is undoubtedly an impressive lens and offers incredible reach. However, with a weight of 2,475 g (5.5 lbs) and dimensions of 119.8 x 346 mm (4.7 x 13.6 in), it enters a different category altogether. While the extra reach can be valuable for dedicated wildlife photographers, the larger size and additional weight make it a lens that I would probably leave at home more often.
Of course, the Sony FE 100–400 mm F4.5 GM OSS is not a lens that I would carry on every single trip. Nevertheless, it strikes an excellent balance between reach, image quality, and portability. For my style of photography, that balance is often more important than having the longest focal length possible.
Image Quality and Autofocus Performance
Image quality is where the Sony FE 100–400 mm F4.5 GM OSS truly stands out.
The photograph below was captured at 400 mm and demonstrates just how much detail this lens is capable of resolving. Even the fine protective net surrounding the bell tower is rendered with remarkable clarity, while architectural details, textures, and edges remain crisp throughout the frame.
What impressed me most during testing was the consistency of the optical performance across the entire zoom range. Sharpness remains outstanding from 100 mm all the way to 400 mm, with excellent contrast and micro-detail that fully utilize the capabilities of modern high-resolution Sony cameras.
The autofocus performance is equally impressive. Whether photographing birds, wildlife, or moving subjects, the lens locks onto the subject almost instantly and tracks it with exceptional precision. Throughout my testing, focus acquisition was consistently fast, reliable, and accurate.
Compared to many telephoto zoom lenses I have used over the years, the Sony FE 100–400 mm F4.5 GM OSS feels like a different class altogether. Sony has clearly pushed the performance beyond what most photographers would expect from a zoom lens in this category.
Build quality is equally impressive. The lens feels exceptionally well made and inspires confidence from the moment you pick it up. The zoom ring operates smoothly and precisely, making it easy to react quickly to changing situations and fast-moving subjects. Whether photographing wildlife, birds in flight, or sporting events, the lens never feels like it is slowing you down.
For photographers who demand both outstanding image quality and professional autofocus performance, the Sony FE 100–400 mm F4.5 GM OSS sets a very high standard.
Exceptional Resolution and Cropping Potential
One aspect that impressed me throughout my testing was the incredible amount of detail the Sony FE 100–400 mm F4.5 GM OSS is capable of resolving.
The comparison above shows an original image captured at 400 mm alongside a 300% crop of the same photograph. Even at this extreme level of magnification, the image remains surprisingly usable and retains an impressive amount of detail. Feather structures, textures, and fine transitions remain clearly visible, demonstrating the exceptional resolving power of the lens.
All test images were captured using the Sony Alpha 7R VI, and it quickly became apparent that this lens was designed to fully exploit the capabilities of modern high-resolution sensors. Together, the Sony FE 100–400 mm F4.5 GM OSS and the Sony Alpha 7R VI form an outstanding combination that delivers remarkable sharpness, detail, and flexibility.
What I particularly appreciated during post-processing was the amount of reserve available in the files. Whether cropping, adjusting contrast, or enhancing fine details in Lightroom, the images responded exceptionally well and retained a natural, high-quality appearance throughout the editing process.
To be fair, the Sony FE 400–800 mm F6.3-8 G OSS also delivered excellent image quality and impressive levels of detail. However, when comparing files side by side, I consistently found the Sony FE 100–400 mm F4.5 GM OSS to have a slight edge in overall image quality. The difference is not dramatic, but it becomes noticeable when working closely with the files during editing and extracting the maximum amount of detail from high-resolution images.
For photographers who frequently crop their images or work with ultra-high-resolution cameras, this additional level of optical performance can make a meaningful difference.
Sharpness, Colors, and Bokeh Throughout the Zoom Range
After spending time with the Sony FE 100–400 mm F4.5 GM OSS, one thing became very clear: image quality is exceptional throughout the entire zoom range.
Whether photographing architectural details, wildlife, or subjects such as the classic car shown above, the lens consistently delivers outstanding sharpness, excellent contrast, and beautiful color reproduction. Fine details are rendered with remarkable clarity, while textures, reflections, and subtle tonal transitions retain a natural and realistic appearance.
What impressed me just as much was the quality of the bokeh. For a telephoto zoom lens, background separation is surprisingly smooth and pleasing. Subjects stand out naturally from their surroundings without the image feeling artificial or overly processed.
One of the greatest advantages of a lens like this is the ability to create images that many photographers simply cannot capture with standard equipment. The extended focal range opens up entirely new creative possibilities, allowing photographers to isolate details, compress perspectives, and discover compositions that would otherwise remain hidden.
Of course, this level of performance comes at a price. With a retail price of around €4,999, the Sony FE 100–400 mm F4.5 GM OSS is clearly aimed at ambitious enthusiasts with a substantial budget as well as professional photographers who rely on the highest possible image quality for their work.
That being said, Sony has created an exceptional telephoto zoom lens. It combines outstanding optical performance, excellent autofocus, beautiful rendering, and surprisingly good handling in a package that is difficult not to admire. After spending time with it during my field testing, I found myself wishing I did not have to give it back.

Key Specifications That Matter in the Field
While specifications rarely tell the full story, a few numbers immediately stand out. The constant F4.5 aperture throughout the entire zoom range is particularly impressive and allows for consistent exposure and subject separation from 100 mm all the way to 400 mm.
Another highlight is the relatively compact size and weight. At 1,840 g, the lens is certainly not lightweight, but considering its optical performance and focal range, it remains surprisingly practical for hiking, wildlife photography, and long days in the field.
Combined with Sony’s Optical SteadyShot stabilization and compatibility with both 1.4× and 2.0× teleconverters, the Sony FE 100–400 mm F4.5 GM OSS offers exceptional versatility for photographers who need both reach and image quality.
